MAJOR NETWORK O&O STATIONS WON'T SHUT OFF ANALOG UNTIL JUNE 12
"TV stations owned and operated ["O&O"] by ABC, CBS, Fox & NBC/Telemundo will not shut off their analog signals until the new June 12 DTV transition date...." (NAB Smart Brief, 2/6/09)
"All of the major network O&Os have committed to stay on through June 12, that would include KNBC/KWHY, KCBS, KABC, and KTTV/KCOP, at least [in the Los Angeles area]." (FCC source)
SAN DIEGO COMMITMENT TO SHUT OFF ANALOG ON FEB 17 CHANGES
At least for the moment, it appears that the commitment made earlier by all of the full power commercial San Diego TV stations to end analog transmissions on February 17 (see CGC #881) has changed. Here are the plans as of late last week as reported by a number of reliable sources:
KNSD, owned and operated by NBC, will continue analog until June 12 because of corporate instructions to do so.
KUSI is now heavily leaning toward June 12.
KFMB, KGTV & KSWB are reportedly sticking with the February 17 date.
Non-commercial KPBS still plans to keep analog on through their March pledge month. However, that operation could go into April, according to one source, if additional revenue is needed.
XETV, Tijuana, still plans to stick with analog until told to sign-off by the Mexican government, probably well into the next decade.
XHDTV, Tecate, no information reported.
And here are some comments from people in California.
I have a hard time believing that another four months is going to make a big difference.
Our station is ready, let's do Feb. 17. The same people who can't read the fine print in their mortgages will be DTV-clueless four months from now.
Keeping both NTSC and DTV on the air extra months will be financially hard on our operation. [From a full power southern California educational TV station.]
Reader K.M. Richards <KMR (at) kmrichards.com> has posted his long-form letter on the Internet. He tells us about his DTV reception experiences approx. 30 miles west of Mt. Wilson and urges that the February 17 date be upheld: http://www.kmrichards.com/digitaltv.html
Concerning the DTV transition, it's great to be retired. - Robert S. Sudock, formerly with KTTV/KCOP Los Angeles
